[Qui-Gon happened to be in the living room, reading, when Eikichi winds up at his home and announces his presence in a very... Eikichi way. He rises to his feet and opens the door, curious as to what the teenager could be talking about.]
Hello, Eikichi.
[That's as good a way to begin as any.]
[Qui-Gon's eyes fall onto the food platter and then snap back up to Eikichi's face, his brow furrowed in curiosity.]
[At least he was polite enough not to barge in. It was the little things. Although not it is his turn to be confused.]
The text post to Kinugawa's cooking classes? You said you didn't know how to cook so I offered to bring you some food to make up for the times I didn't offer you any...
[Please hold while Eikichi.exe reboots...okay there we go.]
I should have suspected something, but it really did sound like you! Who would pretend to be you saying you can't cook so you'd get free food?
[Aka any suspects who won't be getting food probably. He doesn't mind entering at all, but looks down at the food before looking slightly uncomfortable.]
Well okay...I need a break anyway and someone's watching Jackson. But I'll only have the dim sum. Anything with fish...not a fan of it.
[Yes, he makes food he doesn't like, the true sign of friendship, or more like the true sign his dad forced him into this fish-related sushi-filled lifehood.]
Oh so...at least they weren't lying, I guess. [Still, they could just tell the guy. But that's probably because Eikichi has a hard time lying himself that he has low tolerance for others doing it.] W-well in that case, if you ever need cooking lessons lemme know!
[He takes a seat and hopes that the drink does not involve booze.]
If you do have a list of suspects, lemme know. I could pay 'em a little visit.
[Qui-Gon chuckles as he steps into the kitchen. For once, he doesn't have tea ready, so Eikichi will have to do with water instead, which is exactly what he returns with, sitting across from his friend.]
You don't want to learn how to cook? [Darn. Maybe he could have gotten freaking laser beam sword lessons out of it. He takes the glass of water with a (very) grateful look.]
U-um no problem. Well, hey at least someone cared enough for you to get food I guess?
Ahhh yeah...that makes sense. Honestly I mostly know about making this shit cause pa forced me too as a kid to take over the family business.
[He looks down at the plate of food.]
Well there's various fish that I get from a few fishmongers and even some friends bringing 'em in. The raw slices are sashimi...that's just raw pieces of fish. [He does on to describe some of the fish. It's pretty obvious that he knows what he's talking about.]
Sushi is the same thing, but in a bed of rice! It's made so you don't need chopsticks to eat em like the sashimi. I've brushed them with a bit of soya sauce and I've been working on making my own flavoring for the rice too.
Have you used chopsticks before? Do they use those in space?
[He then points to the Dim sum.]
These are modified versions from the menu we serve at the spa. The original owner had these, I just added a more Japanese twist to 'em since I'm more knowledgeable about those, and some vegetarian options.
There are steamed dumplings with various meats, some with local vegetables, fried glutinous rice dough balls, and some salad to go along with everything. [Aka what he will be mostly eating today. He looks less knowledgeable about the dishes, but he's trying. There's a huge difference between 'started making this 6 months ago' vs 'dad's been beating me this fish shit since I was 6']
[Qui-Gon remembers enjoying the dim sum from his and Obi-Wan’s stay at Eikichi’s spa, and the way his eyes light up when Eikichi gestures to them says as much. Everything else gets at least an interested look and nothing that would suggest a dislike from Qui-Gon’s end. He’s always been about enjoying other cultures, after all, and that includes their food. That, and he’s just not a picky guy.]
[Not quite ready to attempt using the chopsticks, Qui-Gon reaches for a piece of sushi. He examines it carefully with a curious eye.]
Pccht! Rules. Well yeah, there are. If you ate at my dad's restaurant, you'd need to do it by the Japanese social rules, but I was never a guy to dwell too much on it, you know?
[He's still going to explain them, just that if Qui-Gon doesn't want to do it, he doesn't really care.]
Basic rule; eat it with the fish side to your tongue. I'd also start with the lighter tasting fish, which uh, I've been told are these...[He points to a few.] then, finish with the other. There's also some gari if you want to clean your palate after each bite along with water. It's pickled ginger, but I'm not sure if it tastes exactly like home...hard to make everything like home when they don't have the same stuff.
[Eikichi earns Qui-Gon's rapt attention as he listens to the list of cultural etiquette, always one to absorb whatever he can about the galaxy outside of what he's familiar with. Even someone who's visited hundreds of other worlds still has a lot to learn. It's a fact that keeps his heart humble and his mind open.]
[So he places down the sushi he'd originally picked and goes for a piece gestured to by Eikichi, popping it into his mouth as instructed. His eyebrows raise, impressed.]
Heh heh...yeah that's the type of verb pops would use to describe the food too.
[He nods to himself before eating part of the his own food.]
Did anyone show you chopsticks? We use 'em all over in Japan to eat just about anything. Which is why a lot of the food is either long like noodles or all chopped up by the chef before bein' eaten.

Hello, Eikichi.
[That's as good a way to begin as any.]
[Qui-Gon's eyes fall onto the food platter and then snap back up to Eikichi's face, his brow furrowed in curiosity.]
I don't recall any arrangements made for food...?

[Okay we good? We good.]
I'm afraid I'm not sure what you're talking about. So perhaps it was not.
[Regardless, Qui-Gon steps aside, giving Eikichi plenty of room to enter his home.]
However, I'm not one to turn down a good meal. Why don't you come inside? We can share.

Most likely someone who's had to endure my cooking. Even more impressively, someone who's lived to tell the tale.
[Okay, maybe it's not THAT bad, but Qui-Gon is plenty self-aware when it comes to his culinary skills. Or lack thereof.]
That's fine with me. Now please sit down. I'll fetch us something to drink.

Although, you're right--I should thank whoever is responsible for their concern.
[He motions to the food on the platter]
Could I ask you about what it is you've brought today?

[He quirks his brows and dips his head in Eikichi's direction, as if inviting him to give a lesson. He's all about cultural exchange, after all.]
Is that the majority of the kind of food you cook?
