[He doesn't need the link between amulets to read the remorse and regret behind Galen's words. It's the contrition of one who wants to atone. It's the contrition that inspires kindness in Qui-Gon's next words.]

Just as I've realized you are not that person anymore. You've broken those bonds, and you are striving to be better.

[ He does regret. So much. It's painful enough that most of the time he tries to forget, though that only succeeds in bringing him more guilt and just starts the cycle all over again. ]

I've done a lot of things though, for him. [ The 'him' quite obviously being Vader. ]

Things that even back then I wasn't always comfortable with... I don't think I can ever do enough to make up for it all.

You can never make up for what was done in the past, Galen. What is done, is done.

[A harsh lesson to learn, but an important one nonetheless.]

What you can do, however, is focus on who you are now, and how that will impact who you will be in the future. Who will you help? What sacrifices will you make?

You already have a strong start.

But you realized it and broke free with the intention of righting whatever wrongs were done while you were under his instruction.

Many don't even make it that far. You have a tenacious will, Galen. That is a good thing.

That's the only good thing I learned. Before each mission, before each training session, he'd always begin by telling me I probably wouldn't survive it.

[ And a few times he almost wished he wouldn't. Learning under Vader was extreme at the best of times. ]

Proving him and odds wrong was all I lived for sometimes.
